A quiet May overall. On 1st a small fall of Whitethroats occurred. Other birds present on 1st and 2nd included Red-breasted Merganser, Greenshank, Bar-tailed Godwit, Grasshopper Warbler, Cuckoo, Short-eared Owl and Ring Ouzel. A Black Redstart and local rarity Corn Bunting appeared on 3rd. A Wood Sandpiper was at Filey Dams on 9th. On 10th Swift, a pair of Garganey, Yellow Wagtail, Red Kite and Cuckoo were seen. A Spoonbill was photographed at Filey Dams on 11th. Marsh Harrier and Little Gull were in on 12th. The now nearly annual spring Red-rumped Swallow went south at Hunmanby Gap on 13th. Dingy Skippers were seen at Reighton Cliffs on 14th. Two Spotted Flycatchers were in Top Scrub on 15th. Four Wood Sandpipers, Redstart and Little Ringed Plover appeared on 16th. Painted Ladies were in a garden on 19th. A Hooded Crow was at East Lea on 27th – 30th, possibly the first twitchable one for many years. Three Mandarin Duck were there on 28th.
