A quieter month, but with a very surprising breeding record at Filey Dams. On 1st a Brent Goose and a Red–tailed Diver were in the bay corner with a pair of Gadwall on Carr Naze pond. The Avocets remained at Filey Dams all month. A Hobby flew north at Hunmanby Gap on 2nd. A pair of Garganey were at Filey Dams on 3rd. On 4th a Raven flew north at Hunmanby Gap mobbed by Rooks. A Little Ringed Plover displayed over East Lea early morning of 5th. A Greenshank dropped into Filey Dams. 13 Ringed Plovers, 7 Sanderling, 2 Turnstones, 3 Sandwich Terns and 2 Arctic Terns were on the Brigg. Two Ruddy Shelducks were at East Lea on 6th, perhaps a tick in waiting. A pair of Shelducks with 7 chicks were at the bottom of Carr Naze steps. Where did they nest? On 10th a Hummingbird Hawk-moth and Large Red Damselfly were around a garden pond (East Lea). A Red Kite flew over west of Filey Dams on 11th, with a Hobby over East Lea heading towards town. On 17th six Bottle-nose Dolphins were on the Bay side of Brigg. An out of season Snipe was at Filey Dams. Three Green Sandpiper arrived at Filey Dams on 18th. Seven Eiders (male, female and 5 immature males) were off the Brigg end on 20th. Twelve Crossbills flew south at Hunmanby Gap, with another Raven on 21st. On 24th A total of 67 Crossbills went south at Hunmanby Gap plus 117 Swifts, 85 Starling, 2 Siskin. The Avocets hatched two chicks. Five Black-tailed Godwit were at East Lea. On 25th 195 Crossbills flew south at Hunmanby Gap, as well as 265 Swift and 3 Black-tailed Godwit. By 25th two Avocet chicks had become four. A most unexpected breeding record. A Spoonbill arrived at Filey Dams the same day. There was a second-hand report of a White-spotted Bluethroat at the Yacht Club on 27th. On 30th there was a Black-tailed Godwit (islandica) with 40 Curlew in East Lea fields. 260 Swifts flew north at Hunmanby Gap, and later 350 Swifts flew south at Muston Sands in half an hour. An adult Mediterranean Gull was in the bay corner.
